The concept of the porch is a lost art in our culture. The porch was designed to be a place of rest and refuge; an invitation to someone who might be cold and lonely; a place of acceptance. That’s our goal at Sanctity of Life Ministries – for 30+ years our desire has been to be a safe place; a place of love and compassion no matter what the outcome might be. I wish I could tell you that every appointment ends up in the receiving of “Life in Christ…Life in the Womb. But that is not the case. Some examples will help to illustrate:
A law student planned to have a second trimester abortion. While having an ultrasound she didn’t even want to look at the baby in her womb. She left the center with no desire to have copies of the scans of the baby inside. Fast forward a little time and she came to embrace this 14 week old little one inside her and impacted her decision to “carry”! She chose life.
Conversely, a client came in leaning toward abortion but was looking forward to the ultrasound scan. Even though some folks that are close to her insisted that she get an abortion, she was extremely moved by the ultrasound scan. As a matter of fact, after her ultrasound, unprompted by us she said “I believe we have saved a life today!” She was smiling with her whole face. Two days later she called us to let us know that she had aborted her baby. Outside influences proved stronger than she could withstand. Despite her choice, she came back to meet with our nurse to help begin the grief process. She chose abortion.
Recently, a client came in for her second ultrasound. She was abortion-minded. Her mom accompanied her. The mom said that as soon as she entered our center she knew she made the right decision coming to SLM. Her words were something like – “I felt this was a place of rest and refuge and that they felt warmly invited in because we were a place of acceptance.” The young client is going to keep her baby! She chose life.
No matter the outcome we desire to be Jesus’ Front Porch.
Your prayers and financial investment in Sanctity of Life Ministries enables them to continue to be that kind of Front Porch. Remember, every gift of $500 helps one client walk through the entire process which includes a pregnancy test, ultrasound scan, parenting classes, material needs provision and peer counseling. If a $500 lump sum gift is too much for you, consider committing online to $40 a month. You can donate online right now.
A lesson for all of us – we are to be Front Porches for Jesus no matter where God’s places us in society, inviting the culture to come to a place of compassion, refuge and answers.
